SOVA COLLEGE READY PROGRAM

SOVA College Ready Program for water polo players

SOVA has partnered with five-time Olympian Tony Azevedo to offer a program designed for Junior and Senior boys and girls water polo players interested in playing water polo at the college level.

*** CLICK HERE to learn about our Central California Azevedo College Showcase for boys and girls 16/18U: Tony provides a clinic, skills challenge assessment and a four-on-four tournament with college coaches in attendance. Tony will provide an evaluation and letter of recommendation to a college water polo program for top performing players. ***

Tony Azevedo (5-time USA Men's Water Polo Olympic Team) and Maggie Steffens (2-time USA Women's Water Polo Olympic Team Gold Medal winner) founded 6/8 Sports to help young water polo players increase their skills. Together they have created the Water Polo Skills Challenge Assessment. The challenge consists of 7 skills challenges specific to water polo (7 skills for field players and 7 skills for goalies). This assessment results in a composite score that is ranked against other players in the same age groups.

SOVA has partnered with 6/8 Sports to make this Skills Challenge Assessment available to SOVA players twice a year in conjunction with a Tony Azevedo Shooting Clinic. The results are recorded to a mobile application that provides access to training resources to specifically address areas of improvement need as identified by the skills challenge assessment. All age groups will be eligible to attend the Clinic and Skills Challenge Assessment. In addition, as a partner with 6/8 Sports, SOVA will administer a practice Skills Challenge Assessment during the Winter/Spring Session. This will not be an official score and will not be loaded up to the national results database available on the 6/8 Sports Mobile App. It will give our SOVA players and coaches a metric by which to tailor instruction toward the areas identified by the practice Skills Challenge Assessment.

Our 16U & 18U coaches are focused on getting SOVA boys and girls players ready for college water polo. Our veteran coaching staff has played at the college level and have demonstrated great success as high school coaches with League and CIF Sectional playoff and championship wins. Our network of contacts with coaching staffs at junior colleges, small colleges and Division 1 NCAA college water polo programs gives us the ability to promote our 18U players to the programs that will be the best fit for their skills

Included in the Winter/Spring Session fee, we offer our 18U and 16U boys players the opportunity to scrimmage every Thursday evening (7:00 PM to 9:00 PM @ Mt. Whitney High School) with the SOVA Masters team. This puts our players in the water with a team of former college players (and current coaches) from all levels including NCAA Division 1. This is a key resource to prepare SOVA players for the next level.

Over the last five years, SOVA players have gone on to play at; Cuesta College, Merced College, Concordia University, Cal Baptist, San Jose State, Sierra College, Chapman University, Salem University, Fresno Pacific University and others.
